One thing that let Liverpool down last season was their
inability to turn shots into goals. They would go whole games dominating
possession, having up to 5 times as many shots as the opposition and still
coming away with a loss or a draw. Liverpool brought in Fabio Borini who scored
9 goals in 24 appearances for Roma to improve their luck in front of goal, did
it work?
I have decided to analyse the data from the first 5 games of this season and compare them to the first 5 games of last season to see whether Liverpool had become more clinical in front of goal.
Liverpool have actually had twelve more shots on goal in the
opening 5 games of this season than they did last season and 50.6% of shots
this season have been on target compared to 40.3% last season.
Does this mean they are more clinical? Well no as by this
point last season Liverpool had scored 6 goals compared to the 4 they have
scored this season. That means that at the moment 5% of their shots are
goals and at this stage of last season it was 9%.
So are Liverpool more clinical?
Liverpool are getting into more shooting positions and
having more shots on target but unfortunately they still aren’t getting the
goals. This could be due to the fact that they don’t have an out and out goal
scorer, something they have been lacking since Torres’ departure, Brendan
Rodgers should look to bring in a striker in the next transfer window.
Liverpool had a tough start to their season and hopefully
their increase in shots on target will bring them more goals.
